Mobile Web Experience: Every Second Counts

Posted by Marcus LaRobardiere on Dec 28, 2017

Here’s a quick look at a few random things that average approximately 3.0 seconds:

And now, based on findings from our 2017 Mobile Retail Report, you can add the average mobile web load time for retail brands to that list. Approximately 69% of the brands surveyed had their mobile websites load in 3.0 seconds or faster. On the flipside, we saw a number brands struggle with slow load times, coming in as low as 10.0 seconds.

While it may not seem that significant, mobile web load speeds are actually quite critical in closing the gap between consumers’ expectations and a retailer’s mobile capabilities. Google’s “The Need for Mobile Speed” report found that more than 50% of consumers abandon mobile sites that take longer than three seconds to load.

Further, according to surveys from Gomez & Akami, a one second delay in page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversion. This isn’t a risk retailers can afford to take. Mobile conversion already lags behind desktop, so that additional reduction in mobile web speed and load times means brands are leaving significant revenue on the table. Speed is the name of the game when it comes to a retailer’s mobile web experience, and failing to deliver could be detrimental to their business.
